Collaboration between Carpet Recycling UK and University of Birmingham

Carpet Recycling UK is working with the University of Birmgham’s new £27m research facility. Classed as being one of its kind for providing research, education and training in all matters underground, such as soil stabilisation and improvement, pipeline detection and condition assessment and tunnelling, trenching & trenchless technologies to name a few.

CRUK has been working with the University for a couple of years now researching alternative uses for carpet and textile fibre waste. Our latest collaboration will see the University of Birmingham team and Carpet Recycling UK proactively collaborating to explore alternative uses for post-consumer domestic carpet and textile flooring waste, particularly within the renewable energy sector and construction industry. The collaborative effort focuses on repurposing waste from the carpet industry, proposing the development of a new composite material which exhibits enhanced thermal performance compared to conventional construction materials for geothermal and construction applications.

Although we are still at the early stages of assessing the possibilities and the University preparing a proposal for which we need to take back to our members, we do see this type of research as being an innovative game changer and one of a kind too for our sector. Further updates will be provided in future newsletters and at our annual conference in July.
